1966 SG Special Restoration – Arrival

These photos show the condition of the guitar when it arrived in our shop. It was in pretty rough condition, but the paint (such as it was) was hiding some other issues...

After removing the finish, we discovered that there were a variety of holes that had been drilled and subsequently filled with wood putty. The neck also had a crack running lengthwise towards the body from the headstock.

The fretboard and frets were in pretty rough shape as well...

Here we have repaired the holes with mahogany plugs and will stain them and then match the grain pattern of the surrounding wood with paint, a small brush and lots of patience.

Here's the completed guitar... the owner wanted to keep the option of using humbuckers, so we retained the later-style pickguard and installed some P-94 pickups in place of the P-90s that would originally have been in the guitar.

There are no signs of the holes that we had to repair...
