1953 Les Paul Restoration – Headstock

Even though this older repair has started to come apart, we had to open it up quite a bit farther in order to remove all traces of the old glue and reset and glue the headstock crack properly.

Removing the varnish from the headstock was particularly difficult. The goal was to remove the varnish without harming the original lacquer underneath and not removing any of the silk-screened “Les Paul Model” logo which is not clear coated on these older Les Pauls. This first photo shows the state of the headstock face as it arrived at our shop.

Part way through the process…

The finished result – all of the original lacquer is in place (and even has a nice shine to it), and the “Les Paul Model” logo is intact and vibrant.
